Help the helpless who need you.
Currently, legal services remain scarce in remote areas. Legal Alternatives for Women (LAW) Center Inc., in collaboration with LGUs and BLGUs, has taken a significant step by formalizing their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation. Over the past six months, LAW Center, Inc. has successfully provided 24 sessions of free legal assistance in various barangays within the province and city of Cebu. This achievement has been facilitated by the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Justice Project funded by Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), but only in certain areas covered under the said project.
From January to June 2023, 21 legal aid missions were carried out, benefiting over a thousand individuals. Some of these initiatives included a lecture or talk on RA 9262, also known as the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004, delivered by Atty. Virginia Palanca-Santiago, the President of LAW Center Inc’s Board of Trustees. These efforts provided a valuable opportunity for residents in remote areas to learn about the law and receive free legal services – be it drafting of an affidavit, legal consultation and/or free notarization.

The following are the legal aid missions(LAMs) conducted for the whole year of 2023:
January – no legal aid mission yet as it was a month of planning
February – LAM in Sibonga, Medellin and Naga
March – LAM in Compostela, Liloan, Catmon and Olango Island
April – LAM in Argao and in Mariner’s Court
May – LAM in Carcar, Liloan and Naga
June – LAM in Carcar, but this time in 2 different barangays
July – LAM in Compostela and Talisay
August – LAM in Compostela but in a different barangay
Certain legal aid missions, especially those featuring a talk or lecture alongside legal consultations, drew significant attendance. Despite the success stories, challenges are inevitable. One challenge encountered by the organization and its volunteer lawyers is the limited dissemination of information to the constituents of local counterparts especially if it’s for a legal aid mission alone. The BLGUs should also contribute by informing their residents about the scheduled legal aid missions. Another challenge is the accessibility and the capacity of the venue to accommodate clients.
